Clean Fuels - Early Contractor Involvement
Overview
Our Client is a significant supplier of fuel, lubricants and specialty hydrocarbon products to commercial customers in the aviation, marine, transport, resources, defence, construction, agriculture and manufacturing industries.
The site of this project has been in operation since 1954, and supplies around 50% of Victoria’s fuel and 10% of Australia’s fuel requirements.
Vecta were engaged to provide Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) which is a collaborative approach used in the construction industry where contractors are engaged in the project delivery process at an early stage, often before the design is fully completed. This approach contrasts with traditional methods where contractors are typically brought in after the design phase is complete.
Process
•Early Engagement: Vecta’s early involvement helped in identifying potential issues and opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements prior to construction.
•Collaborative Planning: Vecta collaboration assisted in aligning the project's goals and ensuring that all parties have a shared understanding of the project's outcomes.
•Value Engineering: With contractors' early input, the project can benefit from value engineering, where alternative solutions are proposed to achieve the best possible outcomes.
•Risk Management: Potential risks can be identified and managed proactively which assist in avoiding delays and cost overruns.
•Cost Certainty: More accurate cost estimates and budget control can be developed leveraging Vecta’s real-world insights and construction experience.
•Improved Communication: Vecta improved the communication lines resulting in smoother decision-making processes and a clearer understanding of project objectives and constraints.
Outcomes
•Risk Mitigation: Full project risk identification, ranking, impact and mitigation strategy was developed
•Cost Savings: Vecta identified significant cost saving initiatives.
•Cost Certainty: Vecta provided a fully costed SMPEI solution for the works to enable Client budget decisions.
•Improved Project Schedule: Vecta developed realistic construction timelines and identified potential scheduling conflicts, whilst maintaining Critical Path sensitivity.
•Contracting Strategy: Vecta was instrumental in developing a Client contracting model that ensured practical appropriation of risk.
